Album comes out on Tuesday, so reviews are trickling in. Here are two — one from Chicagoist, and one from Skopemag. The former likes it, the second decidedly does not, though the writer seems to be reviewing our lives rather than our album. Sigh.
I have a friend who called me a Yuppie Punk once. When I complained, she insisted that it was a compliment, and that she wants to be one someday, too.
I’m not a professional music critic so I won’t attempt to review the album. I just want to say that I like it a lot. But then, I knew I’d like it because I’ve been listening to most of these songs for several years already. Its been a nice surprise though to discover that most of the mixes on the album are a little different than the ones previously available on the web. In some cases I still prefer the rough cuts, but that might just be because I’m so used to them.
I should mention that Too Much Joy’s music helped me get through high school (no small feat), so Tim and Jay could probably release an entire record of spoken word rantings and I’d buy it, as my appreciation of their creative sensibilities is still that strong. But that fact notwithstanding, I do think Wonderlick is a band that’s worthy of much praise purely on the merits of its thoughtful, catchy and quite often deliciously subversive music.
Thanks for the kind words — as someone who relied on music to get through high school (and the ten years after that, and still leans on it pretty heavily today), it’s hard to imagine a more meaningful compliment.
